The Birthday Flower Automata Papercraft - A Tribute to Peter Markey
by Paper Pino

The Italian oceanographer and designer Giuseppe "Pino" Civitarese, from the Paper Pino website, the creator of this ingenious papercraft, stated: "Peter Markey was an artist known as a creator of poetic automata.

His work is recognized for its simplicity of design and use of vibrant colors. He didn't concern himself with realistic representations and never carved the wood he used (Cabaret Mechanical Theatre).

His creations, both in wood and paper, were consequently characterized by simple and stylized forms. Recently, Barry Falkner published plans for building Peter's automaton called "The Birthday Flower" in the online Automata Magazine.

Therefore, I would like to pay tribute to Peter Markey by reproducing "The Birthday Flower" in paper, in the form of an assembly kit using the technique of "Removable Interlocking Pins" (RIPs), which allows the automaton to be assembled without glue, starting from some very easy-to-build basic shapes.

"The Birthday Flower" thus becomes a beautiful gift!"

The Ephemeral Museum - Tower Of Pizza - A Relecture In Papercraft
Of An Original Artwork by Alan Wolfson

This paper model is a "copy" and a homage to the original work created by Mr. Alan Wolfson, a brilliant American artist specializing in minaturizing and eternalizing urban scenes.

I decided to create this first because I simply love the scenes created by Mr. Wolfson. It's a level of talent that is beyond any of my ambitions. Secondly, because I can never have an original work by Mr. Wolfson, so I have created any way I can, with the resources I have, a paper mimicry of one of Mr. Wolfson's works of art. I make it clear that this model will not be made available in any way, respecting the work of Mr. Wolfson. It is a tribute to the mesmerizing work of an artist who makes me spend hours observing every detail of each of his little "urban pieces".

"Wolfson’s small, sculptured environments are mini slices of life full of intriguing contradictions. Sculpted without being sculptural, painterly without being paintings, narrative without a story, they exude a photographic or cinematic sense of reality while rarely depicting actual scenes or places. Creating them since the mid '70s, Wolfson has forged a unique place for himself in contemporary art." - Linda Chase

The text above defines the art of Mr. Alan Wolfson, a brilliant American artist specializing in miniaturizing and eternalizing urban scenes.

On his website there is a "frequently asked questions" page and it was there that I got the information that I detail below:

Mr. Wolfson creates all parts of his dioramas. When asked if he buys something in modeling stores, he said: - "Never. I do everything - that's one of my rules. However, out of necessity, I learned how to make many of the graphics in Photoshop."

Regarding the materials used in his work, he says: - "I use wood, cardboard, paper, but again, most of what I do is made out of plastic, which I get from plastic-supply places. Anything structural is made out of sheet acrylic, which is hard; anything that is detail is usually made out of styrene, which is a softer plastic you can cut with an X-Acto knife or a razor blade. I’ll make some of the details out of metal, too, like brass hand railings, which have to be cut and soldered. I generally use carpentry tools for the main construction. There’s a whole world of smaller tools manufactured that are good for the detailing work. I never use a magnifier because I find them too distracting to work with."

What scale do you work in? - "I usually work in ½ in = 1 foot scale, which is half the size of dollhouse scale. The first few pieces I did were in dollhouse scale, but I decided to change to the smaller scale so I could build more intricate environments in the same-sized space. I also find the smaller scale more “intimate.” If I’m building a view out a window, that would be built at a smaller scale than the room interior to force the perspective."

About the Ephemeral Museum:

I "am in the paper modeling" since 2005, although I've had contact with paper models from my childhood in the 1970s, via magazines that were sold sporadically in newsagents. I remember magazines with houses to build and dioramas/playsets of airports, western forts, nativity scenes and the like. With the advent of the internet what happened was simply a revival of the papercraft hobby for me and many other people of my generation. Today I am opening a new session here on the blog, the Ephemeral Museum , which is a place where I will show some of the models that I built all these years. I would also like this to be a space where all modelers friends could show their work, so if anyone wants to participate in this "museum", just send photos of your work and a few words, if you want, to the e-mail:

mautherous@gmail.com

All who submit their work will be published, without exceptions.

Tarsila do Amaral Room Pop Up Stand Paper Model For Kids
by Papermau - Download Now!

Here is small tribute to Brazilian artist Tarsila do Amaral, A Pop Up style paper model, very easy-to-build (just cut in red lines and fold in green lines) and takes up only one sheet of paper. A nice model to be used as playset or stand for miniatures, such as Playmobil and similars.

Tarsila do Amaral (1886-1973) was a Brazilian painter, draftswoman and translator and one of the central figures in painting at the first phase of the modernist movement in Brazil. Her painting Abaporu, of 1928, inaugurates the anthropophagic movement in the Brazilian plastic arts. - know more in Tarsila.do.Amaral.at.Wikipedia

The Ephemeral Museum - Van Gogh`s Yellow House Paper Model
Assembled by Patrick & Franz Raupp

My new friend from Germany, Patrick Raupp, wrote to me asking for the templates for Van Gogh's Yellow House so that he could build it with his son Franz. When I sent him the model I said that if he really built the model and if want, he would send some pictures to the Ephemeral Museum with a few words. To my pleasant surprise, the next day I received the photos and the nice text that I reproduce below:

"My son Franz (11 years old) and me, Patrick (47 years old), are completely new to the paper model world. The teacher of my son gave the hint: learning by building, referring to the famous antique architecture. We were astonished to discover such a great community of people all around the globe building all kind of things out of paper and offering templates free to download.
So we came across to the beautiful papermau blog. We started with the lovely vintage Swiss Mountain diorama and did "Van Gogh - The Yellow House Paper Model“ next. We downsized the yellow house a bit, because I thought the resolution was too low. The building was a great joy and we love the result. The two figures in front of the yellow house were added by us, me and my son sending greetings to the paper model world!

By the way, we are from Germany. So our next project will be a german castle: the Meersburg Castle in Bodensee. The templates just arrived yesterday!"

"Many thanks, Patrick & Franz, for the great photos and the kind words! Greetings from Brazil to Germany!" - Mauther

If you want to build your own Van Gogh`s Yellow House, the link to download the model is right below, at the end of this post.

- Mauther

Van Gogh - The Yellow House Paper Model - by Papermau
Download Now!

As part of the restructuring and cleaning of the blog, today I post here a model originally published in July, 2012. Here is a simple small diorama which is a reinterpretation of a Van Gogh painting, The Yellow House, from 1888. Download link at the end of this post. Enjoy!

"In May 1888, Van Gogh rented four rooms on the right-hand side of a house on the Place Lamartine in Arles. His living quarters were the ones with the green shutters. His bedroom lay beyond. Vincent had finally found a place where he could not only paint but also welcome his friends. His goal was to establish a “Studio of the South,” where he and like-minded artists could work together".

Lá dentro posso com efeito viver e respirar e pensar e pintar".  - Vincent Van Gogh

The Lost Van Gogh Tatebanko - A Papercraft Project For Kids
by Storm The Castle

Here is a nice Van Gogh themed Tatebanko (a kind of Japanese diorama), offered by Will Kalif, from Storm the Castle website. Will says: - "This is a tutorial showing you how to make a Scene Box of a lost Vincent Van Gogh Painting (The Painter on his way to Work). I also give you the template with everything ready to go. You print it up and put it together. Tatebanko is the Japanese art of making dioramas out of paper. Typically the diorama is housed inside a paper box and portrays some kind of scene."

Will Kalif, do site Storm the Castle.

Goldfish Dance - Sake No Zashiki Paper Model - by Tetsuya Watabe
& Kamimodel

Based on the original art of Utagawa Kuniyoshi, the Japanese designers Tetsuya Watabe and Kamimodel have created this nice paper model of a Goldfish Dancing. Utagawa Kuniyoshi was a great master of the Japanese ukiyo-e style of woodblock prints and paintings in the late Edo period. Born in the Nihonbashi Honshirogane-cho area of Edo, Kuniyoshi's talents bloomed when he was still in his teens and he went to study under Utagawa Toyokuni I, a popular artist of the day. When Kuniyoshi was about 30 years old, he came into the limelight when he unveiled the series “One of the 108 Heroes of the Popular Water Margin,” based on a Chinese tale called “Water Margin.”

The paper model and the original art by Utagawa Kuniyoishi
