1878`s Barge Cleopatra Paper Model In 1/250 Scale - by Walden Model

Offered by the British website Walden Model Co., this is the miniature paper model of the Cleopatra barge with its precious cargo, the Egyptian obelisk that became known as "Cleopatra's Needle."

The "Cleopatra" was designed and built in 1877 to transport an obelisk from Alexandria to London. This obelisk had been presented to the English nation in 1819 by Mehmet Ali, the viceroy of Egypt, in commemoration of the victories of Lord Nelson in the Battle of the Nile and Sir Ralph Abercromby in the Battle of Alexandria.

The English government, while appreciating the gesture, declined to finance the transport of the gift. Over the years, several schemes were devised to get the obelisk to London, none of which came to fruition. However, in 1877 the necessary elements to undertake the project, namely brains and money, came together in the shape of engineer John Dixon and distinguished and very wealthy Sir Erasmus Wilson.

Dixon devised a plan for a 92-foot long, cylindrical barge that would completely encase the obelisk, to be towed to England by a tug boat. Sir Erasmus, who was a devoted freemason and so had a certain fondness for obelisks agreed to put up 15,000 pounds (about $2,000,000 in today's money) to finance the project.

The barge was built and shipped in sections to Alexandria, where the obelisk lay buried in sand on the beach. As the monument was unearthed, the barge was assembled around it. The giant cylinder was then rolled into the sea. A deck-house, rudder, and mast were fitted, and the little ship was christened Cleopatra.

On September 21, 1877 the tug Olga towed Cleopatra out into the Mediterranean and began the journey back to England. Disaster struck on October 14, 1877. A violent storm caught the ships in the Bay of Biscay. Cleopatra rolled wildly and soon became utterly untenable. Six volunteers from the Olga, including the captain's son, manned a boat to rescue Cleopatra's crew of five and her captain. The boat capsized and all hands were lost. Unawares, the Olga sent another boat, which at length succeeded in taking off her crew.

The barge was cut loose and quickly disappeared from sight. The Cleopatra was believed lost until the Glasgow steamer Fitzmaurice spotted her floating upright and apparently undamaged. Taken in the Spanish harbor of El Ferrol, Cleopatra underwent repairs. The tug Anglia was sent to retrieve her. The tow got underway on January 15, 1878.

Cleopatra arrived at Gravesend, at the mouth of the River Thames, on January 21, 1878. Amid great fanfare the obelisk, no known as "Cleopatra's Needle" was erected on the Thames embankment on September 12, 1878, almost a year after the voyage had begun.

To extract the obelisk, the celebrated little barge that had attracted so much public attention was dismantled and unceremoniously sold for scrap.

The Lighthouse Of Alexandria Paper Model - by Petr Pokrupa

This beautiful and full of details paper model version in 1/600 scale of the Lighthouse of Alexandria was created by Czech designer Petr Pokrupa and if you intend to build this, you will need 12 sheets of paper.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and was located in the city of Alexandria, Egypt.

It was built in the 3rd century BC and was considered a masterpiece of engineering at that time.

The lighthouse was estimated to be about 120 meters high and was built with stone and marble. It was constructed in three parts: a rectangular base, a central shaft, and an upper platform that housed the lighthouse flame.

The flame was fueled by wood and resin and could be seen from a distance of up to 50 kilometers at night. In addition to helping ships navigate the sea, the lighthouse also served as a symbol of the greatness and power of the Ptolemaic Empire.

Unfortunately, the Lighthouse of Alexandria was destroyed in an earthquake in the 14th century, and today only a few underwater and onshore ruins remain.

Egyptian Temple Entrance Paper Model - Download Next Week!

I started this model in 2014 but for some reason I don't remember now, I put it aside.

Today, messing around in old folders in my crowded HD, I ended up finding the 3D model I made in Sketchup.

I already "disassembled" everything, still using Sketchup and I also passed the result through Pepakura.

I then have the "skeleton" of everything. Now I have to arrange the parts, fix some textures and create the flaps.

Later I will print the sheets and do a "beta" assembly, to see if everything fits well. I believe that by next week I will be able to publish the model here on the blog.

The Funerary Mask Of Tutankhamun Paper Model - by Unknown

I do not know who is the author of this beautiful paper model of the Death Mask of Tutankhamun. I had saved the template a few years ago (2013 or 2014 I think) on a Russian forum specializing in 3D Printing and Pepakura, but visiting it recently I saw that all the download links are invalid, so I won't post the link.

If you like the model, you can easily and safely download it directly from Google Drive (link below, at the end of this post).

The mask of Tutankhamun is a gold funerary mask of the 18th-dynasty ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun (reigned 1334–1325 BC). After being buried for over 3,000 years, it was excavated by Howard Carter in 1925 from tomb KV62 in the Valley of the Kings and is now in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The death mask is one of the best-known works of art in the world and a prominent symbol of ancient Egypt.

The Sphinx Of Giza In Egypt Paper Model - by T. Ichiyama

Perfect for school work, dioramas and wargames and occupying only three printed sheets, this is the paper model of the Great Sphinx of Giza, in Egypt, created by Japanese designer T. Ichiyama exclusively for Canon's website.

The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly referred to simply as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue depicting a sphinx (a mythical creature with a lion's body and a human head) located on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile River in Giza, Egypt.

The monument's face is generally considered to be a representation of the face of Pharaoh Khafre. It is the largest statue made of monolith in the world, measuring 73.5 meters long, 19.3 meters wide and 20.22 meters high.

It is the oldest known monumental sculpture and is commonly believed to have been constructed by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC).

Know more on: The Great Sphinx of Giza at Wikipedia

I leave here my thanks to the Indian modeler Papercraft 99, who has a very nice channel on Youtube about paper modelling.

The video just below, with a detailed assembly of the Sphinx of Giza, was made by him, so all credits to Papercraft 99.

The Ruins - A Simple Stand Papercraft For Mini Figures - by Papermau
Download Now!

As I said yesterday, here is the papercraft of the Stand for Mini Figures, which for lack of a better name, I decided to call "The Ruins".

This model was made and published here in 2013, but with the virus attacks that affected the blog between 2018 and 2019, I thought I lost the original files forever.

Luckily, yesterday I found the templates for this diorama (and a few other older models) on some old rewritable CDs.

So I leave you with the model to download. It's not a big deal and really I don't think anyone will ever build it, but by republishing it I preserve it for posterity.

You will notice that the photos are a little bad, but they are originals from 2013, taken with a very old digital camera, a Samsung I think, and the resolution is low.

Good week to everyone!
